Tips for Wedding Invitations Wording

Anatomy of an Invitation

A typical invitation includes certain customary elements: the host line, request line, bride and groom line, date and time lines, location line, and reception and R.S.V.P. lines. Although every invitation should have all these lines, they can be worded and arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion and the changing times.

The Host Line

Start with the names of those issuing the invitation, traditionally the bride’s parents. Evolving family structures and financial dynamics often make this the trickiest part of the process, so follow the format that best fits your situation.

Social Titles

You don’t have to use courtesy titles (Mr., Mrs., etc.) and middle names, but it’s most traditional and formal. When titles other than Mr. and Mrs. are used, spell them out. The parent who has such a title is listed first: Doctor and Mrs., or Doctor Jane Marie Williams and Mr. John Michael Williams.

If you’re looking for a little less formality — and a chance to list the first name of a married woman — omit courtesy titles entirely. In some instances, as with the example for a deceased parent, using this format will avoid some grammatical awkwardness; if you choose this option, it’s best to omit middle names too.

Special Details on the Wedding Invitation

If your event won’t include a full meal, it’s courteous to inform your guests. Use phrasing such as “and afterward for cocktails” instead of the classic “at the reception.”

If you want to stress the importance of the style of dress — black tie, for instance, or casual attire — place that information in the lower right corner, or on the reception card.

The only thing that should not be included anywhere on your invitation — not even as an insert — is your registry information.

6 Biggest Faux Pas Kids Make at Weddings

To invite, or not to invite, children to the wedding is a topic that has long caused strife to wedding planning couples.  Some say a wedding with drinking and dancing all through the night is no place for children.  Others think that leaving kids off the guest list is ridiculous and rude.  But ultimately, it is up to the couple to choose what’s right for them, and you can’t blame a bride for thinking that no kids means no wedding day disasters.  So today, we take a fun look at the six most major faux pas kids make at weddings!

wedding children

THINKING IT’S ALL ABOUT THEM.

According to The Broke-Ass Bride, you give a kid a flower basket or ring bearer pillow, and suddenly they get a big head about it. And all those adoring adults don’t help matters. These kids might talk loudly during the ceremony, start reciting their ABCs, or break out MJ-style dance moves, totally upstaging your special moment.

SETTING THINGS ON FIRE.

Literally. Kids are pyros. I know I was, and so were my sisters and cousins. When we saw fire, we wanted to play. And when the littlest wedding guests see votive flames dancing across the reception table, you better hope an adult is watching! Wedding planner Glenna Tooman of Memory Makers Event Planning witnessed napkins and programs being set ablaze by kids at one reception, a wedding day disaster waiting to happen!

DESECRATING THE CAKE.

Your wedding cake will be a prime target for underage guests. Realize this now! After all, kids love sweets and often have limited access to them. So the moment they see that beautiful 3-tier fondant wedding cake, the wheels start turning. If given the opportunity, they’ll lick, stick and swipe their fingers through your cake, before your wedding photographer has the chance to capture the cake cutting moment.

TRASHING THE DRESS.

Sure, she looks innocent now but just wait til the flower girl is two pieces of cake deep at the reception… At the ripe age of eight, I custom designed my dress for First Communion (a Catholic sacrament), just to have it destroyed by my younger cousin, moments after stepping onto the dance floor. This still brings a tear to my eye, so imagine how you would feel if your dream wedding dress fell victim to a child at your wedding. Wedding dresses have been ripped, puked on, spilled on, and peed on (yes, it has happened), and the last thing you want is a bridezilla moment after one unruly tike trashes your dress.

SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER.

This one is obvious but we couldn’t let it go unsaid. There is nothing worse than a child wailing/shrieking/bawling during the ceremony as the parent sits there, smiling, like nothing is wrong. In fact, this probably tops the list of biggest faux pas parents make at weddings!

INTRUDING ON THE FIRST DANCE.

The first dance is a special moment between bride and groom.  And unless the couple clearly plans to share the spotlight, they should NOT have to share this moment with a guest’s mini me.  I saw my friend’s first dance interrupted seconds after it started, as her overzealous cousin stormed the dance floor and broke the couple apart, Red Rover style.  She handled it with style and grace, but now that more and more couples are learning choreographed routines for their first dances, the first dance floor should be a kid free zone!

What faux pas have you seen kids make at weddings? And, are you opting for an 18 or 21 and older guest list to avoid potential disasters?

The custom-designed, letterpress wedding invitations echoed the bird and branch elements. A laser-cut sleeve reminiscent of a birdcage was slipped over each invitation, and the door could be opened to see the orange bird on the band underneath.

A picket fence running alongside a hedge inspired these “Spring Stripes” invites.

A destination wedding opens a world of inspirational possibilities. We looked to vintage travel ephemera such as maps, documents, tickets, and passports to create the palette and type of this custom letterpress .

There’s nothing quiet about this stationery suite, inspired by the larger-than-life fonts used in 1950s fashion magazines. At the same time, there’s nothing gauche or loud about it, either. Combining big-statement designs (oversize ampersand and quotation marks) with understated, elegant colors (deep teal and burnished-gold engraving) is the key to pulling off this luxurious and infinitely cool look.

Fresh Wedding Color Palette: Blue and White

White makes right in this elegant and undeniably feminine bouquet, in which butterfly-like sweet peas flutter between bright white Amazon lilies. Delicate hand-wired cattleya orchids flaunt their milky ruffled edges among flirty sprays of fragrant white lilac.

A robin’s egg, transferware china, and other objects offer color cues.

For this suite of stationery, we reinterpreted the hues and regal patterns of transferware and its identifying back stamps. Clockwise from top: Blue vintage postage matches the calligraphy. A monogram personalizes a crown-topped emblem on the invitation. The reply card bears a stamp-inspired laurel and a wave borrowed from a plate rim; the envelope repeats the wave.

It’s a tale of two pretties: No, not the story of the bride and groom, but the way a blue and white palette can wend its way from invitation to dessert buffet.

A parasol is the perfect accessory for the romantic bride, nostalgic of Antebellum garden parties and floaty ball gowns. It will also keep fair skin as white as a wedding dress and by adding a personalized monogram in blue like this one, it can also serve as your something blue for your big day.

How to Pick out Suitable Church Wedding Decorations

  1. Choose décor to suit the season – every season of the year can lend a gorgeous touch to your decorations.  Wedding magazines and internet guides usually have great ideas about integrating seasonal colors and plants into weddings. church wedding
  2. Aisle runners – an aisle runner is a great way to provide more visual focus on you and the wedding party, especially if the church floor is distracting – which it may be if it is elaborately decorated (like mosaic tile) or run-down looking.
  3. Pew bows or ribbons can be used to decorate pews or other areas.  You may want to have some especially pretty “pew markers” for the front rows of pews that are reserved for your special guests.
  4. Standing displays – small, medium, large?  How many?  These can get quite elaborate.  Some florists or wedding decorators can even sell or rent large latticework walls or candleholders that can be decorated with flowers or swags of fabric.  You may also be able to rent live potted plants from some florists or greenhouses.
  5. Other floral displays can be on the pews, at the church windows, inside or outside the church entrance, or anywhere else you think needs some prettying up.
  6. Or keep it simple!  If your wedding church is already beautiful – say, with elaborate artwork, carved wood, or stained glass windows, for example – your wedding decorations may simply be lost in the visual glory that is the church.  If this is the case, you may be better off by providing some simple accents like a removable monogrammed, bows on the pews, or maybe nothing at all!

3 Wonderful Outdoor Wedding Locations

Tying the knot outdoors has become increasingly popular and an outdoor wedding can be fun, exciting and unforgettable. Getting married outdoors means that your ceremony can take place amidst refined or spectacular scenery; it also means that those all important wedding photographs will capture the look of your chosen location, rather than just an interior.

wedding

If you have a lot of guests that you simply must invite, many outdoor venues offer the space to easily accommodate a large guest list. With potential locations around the world, choosing the right venue can be a difficult decision, although any list of the top 3 outdoor wedding locations might read as follows:

Beaches

A beach wedding is undeniably romantic, yet it can also be a little more relaxed and laid back. Some of the world’s best beaches can be found close to home, in Florida, Hawaii and the Caribbean; many resorts will arrange the entire ceremony for you and of course, your honeymoon retreat is just steps away. Farther afield, Bora Bora in the South Pacific has become popular for beach weddings since relaxing its requirements, with some resorts boasting their own wedding chapels alongside the lagoon. Many resorts here offer traditional extras, such as Polynesian feasts and the chance to arrive by canoe, dressed in local costume. Other exotic beach locations include Goa in India, Fiji, Mauritius and the Maldive Islands.

The Unique Experience

Many couples want their wedding day venue to be truly unique. If you want to get married on the Great Wall of China, or overlooking India’s famous Taj Mahal, that can be arranged. In New Zealand, you can say your vows on top of a mountain, after arriving there by helicopter. If you have ever wanted to tie the knot on a train, you can do just that on Britain’s famous luxury train, the Royal Scotsman as it travels through the beautiful Scottish countryside. For a truly white wedding, you can choose to get married amidst the cold surroundings of the Ice Palace Hotel in Quebec, Canada, where even the chapel is made from ice. Whatever your style or budget, the right outdoor venue is out there waiting for you.

Garden-Wedding

Gardens

A garden wedding can be the perfect venue for any couple who loves the outdoors and a garden can be small and intimate, or large and spectacular. Not surprisingly, Hawaii has many beautiful garden outdoor wedding locations, including the Maui Tropical Plantation, suitable for both intimate gatherings and larger groups. On the east coast, New York’s Central Park has become one of the most popular outdoor venues, with its charming and attractive flower displays. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in North Carolina, one of the country’s best, has almost 400 acres of tropical plants and fountains. Kensington Roof Gardens boast a formal Spanish garden in the heart of London, and Mandai Orchid Gardens in Singapore offers wedding packages, which include a lavish buffet.
